The LILS way of teaching and learning
Lanta International Language School has a holistic view of teaching and learning. We don't teach by strictly following chapters and dialogues in a book. At LILS you will learn by doing, acting, listening, creating, speaking, reading and writing.
Accelerated learning methods
We use methods that will accelerate your learning. By picking the most effective teaching methods from around the world and combining them into a varied learning experience we have developed a unique teaching style that will make you learn fast while having fun.
Whole brain teaching
You will get to use both your right and left brain hemispheres when you study at LILS.
Vocabulary is taught by doing and experiencing the words as well as seeing them in texts and on the board. Grammar is taught through stories, games and movies. Reading is taught through pictures which help you to learn the basics of the Thai writing system in a few days. By using your whole brain you will increase your capacity to learn the Thai language.
As we believe in listening, watching and doing, a lot of your homework will consist of
sound files, movies and games. This means that every student needs to have access to a laptop. You can either bring your own or borrow one from the school (15 000 THB
Individual progress plans
You and your teacher will be able to monitor your progress by checking your individual
progress plan. Every week you will discuss your learning (both good and bad experiences) in a private meeting with your teacher.
We care about all of our students and we are aware that language learning can be
stressful and frustrating. To help you learn without anxiety we have introduced (optional) morning meditation every day. This helps you to stay relaxed and open for your new knowledge. The meditation will also help you to improve your ability to concentrate.
Studying languages requires a lot of energy and we know that if you don't refill that energy you will lose attention and learn less. That's why we provide fresh fruit to all students every day during morning break. The fruit will boost your blood sugar levels and fuel your brain with both glucose and vitamins which will help you to learn and stay healthy.
Why do we teach this way?
We have chosen these methods for 3 reasons - the methods are fast, effective and fun.
• FAST: According to Dr. James J. Asher, who is the originator of one of the methods,
you learn 4-5 times faster this way compared to traditional teaching.
• EFFECTIVE: Your learning will be deeper which means that you will get quicker
mental access to your new knowledge and better retention over time.
• FUN: It is fun to study and it is fun to teach this way. This makes the course
enjoyable for both students and teachers, and it is much easier to study while you
are having fun.
We do not use one single teaching method in our Thai language courses as that would
bore you to death. Instead, we use a combination of proven and well-researched methods to give you a varied experience that supports most learning styles.
The research that we have based most of our teaching on is that of Dr. James J. Asher, Blaine Ray, Prof. Stephen Krashen and Dr. Paul Pimsleur. All of them are well known in the field of foreign language acquisition. After studying their work, we have adapted their ideas to our students’ needs and tested the outcome to create the best possible language course.
Are you ready?
When you learn Thai at Lanta International Language School you will encounter teaching methods that make you do, act out and experience the Thai language. This is quite different from traditional methods used at most other language schools. It is important to understand this as you will gain maximum benefit from our methods if you are able to relax and let go of the urge to take notes and memorize vocabulary lists, which might be your first impulse when put in the situation of learning a new language.
If the idea of learning by doing, touching, smelling, tasting, experiencing, looking and listening appeals to you, then you are all set to take our courses.
